Faith has a course
It was never meant to be a flat line.
A lot of believers assume the Christian life should be a steady climb — start strong, learn more, do more, feel closer to God every year. So when the ground gives way, when prayer feels like it bounces off the ceiling, the first thought is: something is wrong with me.
But maturing faith has a shape. It moves through stages — and there is a hard middle that nearly everyone reaches and most are never warned about. It is not a detour. It is the road. Here is the whole of it, so you can find where you are standing.
Before the wall
The climb.
Learning
Discipleship
You learn the language and the practices — Scripture, prayer, community, belonging. You find your people and follow the patterns. Faith feels like solid ground under your feet.
Doing
The Productive Life
Now you serve. You build, you give, you lead, you bear fruit. Much of it is genuinely good — but slowly, quietly, your sense of God can start to ride on how much you are doing for Him.
Stage four
The wall.
Suffering, loss, doubt, a season that does not lift. The faith that carried you suddenly does not seem to work — and you cannot tell where God is, what He is doing, or when it will end.
It can arrive through a crisis or just creep in: a quiet emptiness underneath a busy, productive Christian life. The old answers feel thin. The practices that used to fill you up run dry. You feel lost, and worse, you feel alone in being lost.
Hear this clearly: the wall is not a sign your faith failed. It is a stage of faith. It is the place God uses to take you past believing the right things into truly knowing Him — to transform you from the inside out. It is meant to be here.
If you run from it
You go back to doing and performing, stay busy, and quietly settle for a faith that stalls. This is where most turn back — and why so few are ever told what they were really facing.
If you lean into it
You let God do the deep work — surrender, honesty, waiting in the dark. It is the hardest season of the journey, and the one where He does the most. Stay in it, and He does incredible things.

The Journey Outward
On the far side, faith is rebuilt on something truer than performance. You serve again — but now out of love and rest rather than fear and proving. The fruit is quieter, deeper, and it lasts.
